Gameathon kicks off with a week dedicated to introductions to Unity and GameMaker, two of the industry’s most popular game engines. As a beginning game developer, you might not have any experience yet — but don't worry, because Bit Project is here to help you build a strong foundation of fundamental skills.
These workshops will start off with simple tutorials on how to use Unity and GameMaker, and then they’ll escalate to more complex techniques that you can choose to use later on. You will also get to learn directly from Bit Project members and industry professionals like Benjamin Rivers, a published Indie Game developer, and Ben Mcilmoyle, a Unity developer advocate. With all of these core concepts under your belt, you’ll be set for success when developing your game.
Now is your chance to put al that you’ve learned to the test — it’s time for game development! During this week, we’ll be moving away from intro workshops and shifting gears to learn more about advanced topics that you can emulate in your own work. Learn from the Harvard Gamedevs, a student-run organization dedicated to making games, and from your fellow Gameathon participants.
We’ll be hosting multiple work sessions to give you all a chance to brainstorm and collaborate each other through the early stages of development. If you hit any technical roadblocks, you’ll have the entire community there to support you no matter what. By the end of the week, you’ll have completed your own game and learned important tips and tricks to apply to your future games long after Gameathon has ended.
